Habitat

At Saint Thomas, we have our very own greenhouse and habitat to enhance and enrich all areas of school curriculum. Our students get hands-on learning opportunities in our campus outdoor lab. Students plant garlic, herbs, lettuce and sorrel to enjoy later in their school lunches and classroom cooking projects.

Students also can use these areas for personal prayer and quiet reflection. They can pray the preschool prayer painted on stones that line the garden or say the rosary by the statue of Mary. Guided by our dedicated horticulturist from Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, students make their own mark in the gardens by creating artwork such as sand cast birdbaths, a giant set of chimes and stepping stones. Floating solar boats to learn about solar power, identifying frog calls from our pond, and feeding and observing wildlife are some outdoor activities in which students participate.
